Galveston contractor bonds

Galveston surety bonds — starting with the city's $25,000 contractor bond.

Serving Galveston from our southeast Harris County office.

Galveston publishes one of the metro's clearest contractor-bond requirements. Building and electrical contractors need an original surety bond of at least $25,000 naming the City of Galveston or assignee. We issue that bond plus public-work, county court, title and statewide bonds.

Galveston's contractor-registration bond

The City requires building and electrical contractors to carry a surety bond with a minimum of $25,000, described by the city as a permitting and general-contracting bond, with the obligee written as "City of Galveston or assignee." The city states that bonds must be original — a scanned or emailed copy is not what gets filed, so build delivery time into your registration.

HVAC contractors do not need this surety bond to register with the City of Galveston, though they still follow their licensing, insurance, and permit obligations. That single exclusion is the detail most generic Galveston pages get wrong.

Registration also carries a $200 initial fee, a $25 annual fee, and liability insurance with a minimum of $300,000 showing the City of Galveston as additional insured and certificate holder. Insurance and bonding are separate registration items — carrying one does not satisfy the other.

Utility right-of-way work and public construction contracts can add their own bond requirements on top of registration. Send the solicitation or the right-of-way application and we will tell you which bonds stack.

Texas and federal bonds

Texas and federal bonds are the same statewide — even when you buy from a local Houston agent.

Most customers searching for a surety bond in a Houston-area city do not actually need a city bond. Auto-dealer, notary, bonded-title, mortgage-broker, public-adjuster, TABC, freight-broker, Medicare, court, and fidelity bonds are created by a Texas or federal requirement. The amount and obligee do not change because your business is in Galveston rather than Houston.

What does change is the filing path. A bonded-title customer usually works through the county tax assessor-collector serving the vehicle owner. A probate or guardianship bond follows the court handling the estate. A contractor bidding a city project follows that solicitation's bond forms. We identify the obligee first, so you do not buy the right kind of bond on the wrong form.

Common bondAmount / termAuthority
Texas auto dealer $50,000 / 2 years TxDMV
Freight broker (BMC-84) $75,000 / annual FMCSA
Texas notary $10,000 / 4 years Texas Secretary of State

Texas public adjuster $10,000 / annual Texas Department of Insurance
Medicare DMEPOS $50,000 / annual CMS
Performance bond Usually contract amount Project owner / contract documents
Payment bond Usually contract amount Project owner / Texas public-work law
How it works

Three steps from requirement to issued bond.

  1. 01

    Send the requirement

Call (281) 484-8320 or start a free quote. Send the bond form, permit application, court order, bid documents, or agency notice if you have it.

  2. 02

We confirm the obligee and form

We check whether the requirement belongs to the city, county, State of Texas, federal government, court, or private project owner. On Galveston Island that usually separates a City of Galveston registration bond from a Galveston County court or title filing and from a statewide licence bond.

  3. 03

    Approve, issue, and file

Most license and permit bonds can be approved the same day. Contract and court bonds may require financial information or a court order. We issue on the required form and tell you where the original or electronic bond goes.

Galveston FAQ

Questions Galveston applicants ask us.

How much is the Galveston contractor bond?

At least $25,000. The city describes it as a permitting and general-contracting bond and requires the obligee to be written as "City of Galveston or assignee."

Who needs the Galveston contractor bond?

Building and electrical contractors registering with the City of Galveston, under the current registration rules published by the Building Division.

Do HVAC contractors need this bond?

No. The city's official contractor page states that HVAC contractors do not require a surety bond to register with the City of Galveston. They still follow licensing, insurance, and permit requirements.

Can I email a copy of the bond?

The city says bonds must be original. Confirm the current accepted delivery method with the Building Division at 823 Rosenberg, Room 401 before sending, and allow time for the original to arrive.

Is liability insurance still required if I have the bond?

Yes. Registration lists liability insurance with a minimum of $300,000 showing the City of Galveston as additional insured and certificate holder, plus a $200 initial fee and a $25 annual fee. Insurance and bonding are separate items — a bond guarantees your obligation to the city, while insurance protects you.

Why Galveston customers call us

Houston-based help without pretending there is an office in every suburb.

One agent, every obligee

We serve the entire metro from 360 FM 1959 in southeast Harris County. You get a Texas agent who can read the city form, court order, or bid package — not a location page that routes to a generic call center.

Municipal, state, federal, court

More than 40 years of combined insurance experience across municipal, state, federal, contract, court, and fidelity bonds, handled through one relationship rather than four brokers.

Right form the first time

We confirm the obligee, amount, and form before issuing — which matters most in split-county and unincorporated communities where the mailing address does not decide the requirement.
